Gay marriage a plus for everyone’s rights
Arlene Sawicki wrote to the Fencepost on Feb. 24, “Protect marriage for the good of all . . . protecting traditional marriage as the time-honored, fundamental cell of human society.” Well then, perhaps we should outlaw divorce, because 50 percent of marriages end in divorce. Marriages of same-sex couples would have a much less impact than divorce.
Besides, America is built on equal rights. I fail to see how another couple’s marriage could affect my marriage of 60-plus years — or that of any of my children. As a matter of fact, suppressing the rights of someone else suppresses my rights. So extending the rights of gays and lesbians to marry enhances the rights of everyone.
