The National Weather Service said a wind chill advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. Thursday, and that highs today will only get to about 13 degrees.
This is the third day in a row where a wind chill advisory and subzero temperatures smack commuters in the face as they head to work and school.
The National Weather Service said wind chill readings could reach 20 to 30 degrees below zero across northern Illinois.
At those temperatures, frostbite can damage exposed skin within 30 minutes.
At 6 a.m., the temperature at O'Hare International Airport was 6 below with a wind chill reading of 20 below. Lake Villa had a reading of zero with windchills of 20 below zero, while had temperatures at about negative five with wind chills making it feel like it was 20 below zero.
Temperatures are expected to rise to about 10 degrees by noon today, before a warm up settles in over the weekend and into next week.
Meteorologists said temps will rise to high 30s on Saturday and Sunday, with 40s expected next week.
