Ice causes Indy airport garage canopy to collapse
INDIANAPOLIS — Crews are working to remove ice from what's left of a canopy that collapsed at Indianapolis International Airport's parking garage.
Spokeswoman Susan Sullivan says the Teflon fabric canopy ripped beneath the weight of ice and snow late Saturday night, dumping ice onto moving walkways, escalators and rental cars in the garage's central atrium. A mechanical sculpture was also damaged. No injuries were reported and there was no damage estimate.
She says workers are spraying hot water and manually scraping to remove ice from the remaining sections of canopy. The canopy is about 100 feet wide by 2,000 feet long. Officials have closed the top floor of the garage.
Sullivan says officials are consulting with the canopy's manufacturer and other experts on how to prevent any more collapses.
