Hawthorne jockey hurt in Friday race

Jockey Brandon Meier of Winfield was transported to Loyola Medical Center on Friday following an accident in the second race at Hawthorne Race Course.

Meier, 22, was unconscious on the track but started coming around on the way to the hospital and was able to move his arms and legs when directed, according to information provided by Hawthorne officials.

Track officials reported at 5:45 p.m. Friday that Meier regained consciousness and is mobile. Tests showed no bleeding on the brain, and they are awaiting x-rays on his back, shoulder, and hip. He will be held in intensive care through the night.

Jesse Lantz, thrown from his mount when trying to steer away from the accident suffered a scraped and bloody nose but was able to resume his riding engagements.

Ubiquitous, a Tom Dorris trainee, was put down following the incident.

Meier is the son of jockey Randall Meier.
