None injured in Batavia fires

Batavia firefighters were called to the scene of two fires Tuesday that resulted in no injuries.

The first took place at 1:35 p.m. after a machine caught fire at the Curwood-Bemis Co., 475 N. Kirk Road. Officials said the machine, used to heat and bond layers of plastic, caught fire inside the plant. The building’s fire suppression system extinguished the flames moments after the fire started. Officials said the fire caused about $10,000 in damage.

The second fire was called in at 7:34 p.m. with reports that an engine at Kevin’s Auto Repair, On the 1400 block of Lathem Street, had ignited.

Firefighters said the engine of a 2004 Chevrolet Aveo caught fire, but the flames were contained inside the engine compartment. crews doused the flames when they arrived on the scene. Fire officials estimated the car was a total loss.
