Lightning women set to open season

The Northern Illinois Lightning women’s fastpitch softball team will open the 2011 summer season on Sunday with a 3-game round robin tournament at Judson University that includes the Elgin Heat, the Aurora Raiders and the Northern Illinois Thunder.

The Lightning is entering its 12th season at the women’s fastpitch level and is coming off a 23-9 season in 2010 that included the championship of the Lady Hearts Tournament in Bloomington. The Lightning needs 18 wins this summer to reach the 300 plateau for program history.

Sunday’s action begins at 9 a.m. with the Aurora Raiders playing the Northern Illinois Thunder. The Lightning will take on the Elgin Heat at 10:45 a.m., the Thunder at 2:15 and the Raiders at 5:45.

There is no admission charge to Sunday’s events and the Judson softball program will be selling concessions.
