Congress, address nuclear safety

It's important for Congress to fully fund nuclear nonproliferation programs that have been successful in keeping Americans safe. Experts agree terrorists obtaining and using unguarded nuclear materials to attack America is one of the most serious threats facing the country today.

However, these highly successful nonproliferation programs are currently being underfunded. House Republicans have proposed cutting this year's budget by an additional 22 percent. These programs have secured enough material to make more than 120 nuclear weapons since 2009. Failing to fund nonproliferation programs damages American security.

Congress should fully fund proliferation programs in the year ahead to avoid nuclear terrorism before it happens.
