Suburban Skyview: Bird's eye view of Elgin's 121-acre Wing Park

A dreary, overcast December afternoon helped eradicate what was left of the fall colors at Wing Park in Elgin.

Flying 243 feet above the ground where this picture was taken, the trees, cars and walking paths all look like they could be part of a watercolor painting.

The park, named for William H. Wing, a descendant of the Wing family who moved to Elgin in 1846, was opened to the public Aug. 2, 1903.

It's home to the Wing Park Golf Course, the oldest nine-hole municipal golf course in Illinois. It was developed during the first few years of the 1900s when the Chicago area experienced a golfing boom.

In addition to the golf course, the 121-acre regional park boasts an Aquatic Center, tennis, sand volleyball baseball fields and a large playground.
