City provides update on snow removal operations

More than 70 Pieces of Equipment Currently Deployed to Minor Streets and Cul-de-sacs

As the city continues its efforts in removing an estimated 18-22 inches of snow from approximately 1,500 miles of road, employees continue working priority route plans in place in extreme freezing temperatures.

“We understand and share your frustration,” said Public Works Director David Van Vooren. “We have been working non-stop, around-the-clock for the last 48 hours and will continue working until all Naperville roadways are clear. During an average snowfall, the goal is to have all streets cleared within 15 hours after the snowfall has ceased. Unfortunately, this being the third largest storm in history producing an excessive amount of snow, it is taking our crews and contractors much longer.”

The approximately 20 inches of snow and 4 foot drifts require specialized equipment to continue snow removal efforts in some areas. Unfortunately, the city is currently unable to offer information on when specific areas will be cleared. The city's goal is to have all streets open by the evening rush hour.

During a snow event, the city employs a priority route strategy, beginning with roads that carry the most traffic, also known as arterial streets, and the main streets running through subdivisions that connect to the arterial streets. Residential and side streets are given second priority and cul-de-sacs, eyelashes and alleys are given third priority. The city has acquired additional equipment and is continuing to secure more in order to complete operations.
