Outdoors notes

I was recently reminded by a reader that despite the fact we are still in the throes of winter, some of the area ice conditions are suitable for exploration.

This reader reported he caught some walleyes very close to the McHenry Dam — but he also paid the price. The reader, who shall remain nameless, reported to me that he broke through the and took an abbreviated bath.

Need I say more, especially to who might tempt fate?

Fox Chain: In the meantime, ice conditions on the Chain have become tenuous, to say the least. What remains for decent angling is on the mid-lake spots on Petite Lake for crappie and catfish.Fox River: Some of the side and back channels may be OK for panfish action, but check conditions before venturing out.

Lake Michigan: If you#146;re looking for perch, you may have to travel to the far South side where the action continues at 95th St.
