Target to open in for Carson's building

CHICAGO — A historic Chicago building constructed in 1899 to house a department store will become home to a Target store.

The national landmark, designed by famed architect Louis Sullivan, was the home of the Carson Pirie Scott department store from 1904 to 2007. Target officials on Tuesday announced it will lease 124,000 square feet over two floors, but only 54,000 square feet will be selling space.

The store on Chicago's famed State Street is slated to open next year. However, Target officials say they will push to get the store up and running sooner, perhaps as early as October.

As for Target's red bull's eye, vice president John Griffith says the retailer is still working out the details of matching its logo with the building's cast iron and masonry façade.
