Keep insurance card handy while driving in Elk Grove

I am writing to alert everyone to yet another scam to take our hard-earned money from us. In our particular village, if you get pulled over by the police for a driving infraction, be prepared to quickly whip out your insurance card.

My son got a ticket for a stop sign violation. When he went to get his insurance card to prove to the officer that he had insurance, he was instead informed by the officer that a ticket was already written for driving without insurance.

So ensues a trip to the courthouse, mandatory for drivers without insurance. The ticket for driving without insurance is dismissed as it should have never been written. Our vehicle has been insured with the same company since we have owned the car. However on top of the $75 stop sign infraction, court costs are now added to bring the total to $240.

What a great way to get more money out of us. Even if you have insurance, police officers can write you a ticket saying you don't have insurance so you have to appear in court and absorb court fees against whatever ticket they wrote out to you.

My advice is to tape several insurance cards in your vehicle and show them to the officer even before your driver's license and registration. Live and learn or move out of Elk Grove Village.

Try changing the village motto to “Unfair and Expensive” instead of “Exceptional!”
