Teens arrested in Wheeling vehicle break-ins

Two teenagers who were arrested Sunday after breaking into a car in a Wheeling parking lot have admitted to three other vehicle break-ins, police said.

Jose Diaz, 18, of the 800 block of Old Willow Road, Prospect Heights, and Jimmy Garcia, 17, of the 400 block of Bernice Court, Wheeling, were each charged with four counts of burglary to a motor vehicle, according to police.

Wheeling police responded to a report of a burglary in the parking lot of Walmart at 1455 Lake-Cook Road at 8:45 p.m. Sunday, and officers stopped a vehicle leaving the parking lot driven by Garcia, according to police.

During the traffic stop, Diaz admitted to breaking into a vehicle in the parking lot and handed over a stolen GPS unit to police, according to authorities.

Both Diaz and Garcia, the passenger in the vehicle, were taken into custody and admitted to the Walmart burglary and three other motor vehicle burglaries in Wheeling during the past two months, police said.

Bail was set at $30,000 for Diaz and $5,000 for Garcia. Their next court date is March 9.
