N. Ind. landfill to be reused as county park
ROCHESTER, Ind. — Fulton County commissioners plan for the old county landfill to become a public park.
The Rochester Sentinel reported Monday that officials plan to cap the northern Indiana landfill with 2 feet of soil by the end of the summer and turn over its development to the county park board.
Current plans call for the 60-acre site on County Road 450 North near U.S. 31 to be converted into walking trails through area woods, a nine-hole disc golf course and a shooting range for the county sheriff's department.
A Mishawaka landscape architects firm helped officials develop the plan, which is required by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.
The county has budgeted $400,000 for closing the landfill.
