Marriage has transcended change

I am responding to a letter warning readers about the demise of traditional marriage due to civil unions. The concept of marriage has changed throughout history. Rules have shifted to fit each culture class and economy. Centuries ago the church refused to bless the marriages of widows who were too old to bear children. Marriage was viewed as being strictly for procreation.

In the 19th century the courts invented common law marriage. Eventually contraception was legalized which justified that marriage was not only about procreation. Marriage between races was finally recognized, a concept some had claimed was disgraceful and revolting. Divorce was allowed.

Throughout the years panic-stricken conservatives have said that these changes would destroy the moral and social efficacy of marriage. They claimed that God, in His divine wisdom, had placed certain restrictions on it. This eliminated some of His children from enjoying the benefits and blessings married couples are entitled to.

In 1965 the Supreme Court decided that married couples have the right to regulate their own sexual behavior. What had formerly been called a crime against nature was now a constitutional right. Eventually gay and lesbian marriages will be recognized. Marriage will continue to be a sacred union. Families will grow stronger when children are taught that all people are inherently deserving of love and respect. Peace on Earth. Good will to all!
