Why return dog to his abuser?

I have three rescued cocker spaniels living at my house, and being adamant about taking good care of them and treating them and all animals with love, kindness and compassion, I was appalled when I read (as much as I could stand to read) of your Dec. 29 article on Phillip Rinn's unspeakable cruelty to animals. Then I heard about it again on WBBM radio.

This man should be banned from ever having a dog or any other animal ever again. He hit the young dog so hard as to break five of his teeth. Previously, he tied another dog to his bumper, dragged him then ran over him, killing him.

Judge Hallock is trying to decide if the injured dog should be returned to Rinn. That decision should be a “no brainer.” Why in the world would anyone return this poor dog to his abuser?
