Arlington Heights woman nearly lost $5,600 in phone scam
An alert Western Union employee kept an elderly Arlington Heights woman from losing $5,600 to a phone scam, police said.
The 80-year-old woman received a phone call Jan. 21 from a man pretending to be a police officer in Beaver Bay, Canada. He told her she needed to send the money by Western Union to a person in San Diego to pay bond for her grandson, who had been arrested in Canada.
An alert Western Union employee advised the woman that the request was probably a scam, and the woman did not send the money, police said.
