Your news: Play games at Palatine library’s poetry workshop
The Northwest Cultural Council announces a Second Saturday Poetry Workshop from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, Feb. 12, led by Patrice Boyer Claeys. Saturday’s topic will be Playing Games With Poetry.
The Oulipians, a poetic movement of the 1960s, played with game-like poetic forms. Their intent was to arrive at a place where writing is fluid, where words break free of the weakening effects of advertising and politics.
Members will experiment with some of the Oulipians nonce forms or create their own to unlock preconceptions of the meanings of words and word groupings.
Claeys recently completed a two-year certificate in poetry from The Writer’s Studio at the University of Chicago. Her collection, “Good Girls,” resulted from this work. She has spent seven years studying at the Osher Life Long Learning Institute at Northwestern University, where she served as contributor, jurist and editor of the Journal, its award-winning literary publication.
Participants are encouraged to bring 12 copies of their own work to share with the group. Workshops take place at the Palatine Public Library, 700 N. North Court, Palatine, the second Saturday of each month. All poets and writers are invited to attend the workshop. The cost is $15.
