Lunch with a lawyer — free legal consultation

Warren Township residents will have three chances to meet with a lawyer in confidential, free 20-minute consultations on basic legal matters.

The “Lunch with a Lawyer” program will be available from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Jan. 19, Feb. 16 and April 20, township officials announced in a news release. If the attorney lacks the specific information needed, he may follow up at a later time or make a referral.

“It’s not that more people necessarily need legal advice in a bad economy, but that people have less money to spare and make decisions without understanding the law or their rights,” said Adam Krieger, the executive director of Warren Township Youth and Family Services. “We ran this program in the fall and had every appointment filled … the feedback from those served was very positive.”

The legal consultation will be provided by Township Administrator and attorney Ryan M. Johnson, who provided the pro bono services in the fall.

Where did the name of the program “Lunch with a Lawyer” come from?

Krieger remembered seeing a news profile about a lawyer who opened a hot dog stand and provided free legal advice on Wednesdays. Similarly, residents can schedule the time to match their lunch break and bring a sandwich to eat while they wait, he said in the release.

Warren Township residents can call (847) 244-1101, ext. 401, to schedule a time and must be prepared to show proof of residency.
