Glen Ellyn history director's contract not renewed
Financial concerns forced Glen Ellyn Historical Society board members to allow their executive director's contract to expire, officials said Monday.
Executive Director Jan Langford worked her last day Jan. 4 after 6½ years at the helm. In 2010, the last year of her three-year contract, Langford was paid $60,000, which was $5,000 less than the original pact called for. She offered to stay on at a reduced salary in 2011.
But she was informed last week that the board would not renew her contract. She said she wished the board and the society the best of luck.
“I still live in the community and will reap all of the benefits of the society as a member of the community,” she said.
In a news release announcing the decision, society President Bill Peterson said officials remain positive about the group's donations and memberships but increased operating costs forced the move.
“We have been fortunate to have Jan's services for as long as we have, and we will be hard-pressed to find someone with similar energy and creativity to fill her shoes,” he said.
The past year has been pivotal for the society. Through various mechanisms, including an anonymous $200,000 donation in July, the group eliminated much of its debt in 2010.
“We have had a tremendous year and I was privileged to be a part of it,” Langford said.
It is not clear whether a replacement will be hired but spokeswoman Jean Jeske said officials have been compiling a list of possible criteria if a search materializes.
Langford said she enjoyed the interaction that came with the job and hopes to continue helping the village.
“It's a tremendously difficult time for not-for-profit organizations,” she said. “I respect the difficult decisions (board members) have to make. But I hope there is (some way) I am able to serve the community in some capacity. It was really a wonderful six years with tremendous accomplishments. I have no regrets at all.”
