Brighter drives closer in Rolling Meadows

Rolling Meadows is about to get brighter. The city is one step closer to adding streetlights along a dark part of Algonquin Road with the help of federal funding assistance.

Rolling Meadows and Arlington Heights are partnering to improve lighting along the Algonquin Road corridor — which runs from Magnolia Drive to 1,600 feet west of Arlington Heights Road.

Lighting improvements will also be made to Golf Road and New Wilke Road, officials said.

City officials said they've heard from residents asking for brighter streets, hoping to lessen the chance of more pedestrian fatalities and lower instances of crime.

The proposed improvements are estimated to cost $248,025.70 for the city and the village of Arlington Heights.

The city will be responsible for 63.4 percent of the costs, as 130 of the total 205 new light poles are within the city of Rolling Meadows.

The Illinois Department of Transportation awarded $1,828,342.60 for the job based on a bid held last fall, officials said.

Construction is slated to begin March 1.
