Elmhurst cop killed in Homer Glen crash
An off-duty Elmhurst police officer was killed when his pickup truck hit a patch of ice and spun out of control in south suburban Homer Glen.
Kyle P. Dieling, 27, of Elmhurst was traveling east on U.S. Route 6 just west of Spring Creek Lane when his 2004 Nissan Titan spun out on a patch of ice and struck a guardrail, according to the Will County coroner's office and Illinois State Police. The crash took place about 10:40 a.m. Saturday.
Dieling, who was off duty and traveling alone, was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet, where he was pronounced dead at 11:10 a.m. An autopsy Monday determined his preliminary cause of death was head injuries, Coroner Patrick O'Neil said. Routine toxicology tests were pending.
Illinois State Police Trooper Erick Coleman said the crash remains under investigation. He had no information on how fast Dieling was traveling, but said it did not appear that alcohol played a role in the accident.
