Fire destroys Kenosha apartment building, no one hurt

KENOSHA, Wis. — Firefighters in Kenosha say at least 35 tenants have been displaced after a fire swept through an apartment building.

Fire Chief John Thomsen says all residents have been accounted for. He tells WGTD radio that eight people were taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation and minor injuries.

Thomsen says the fire apparently started Tuesday morning in a first-floor living room.

Firefighters used a ladder to help residents escape from the three-story building.

One tenant says he was alerted to the fire by smoke detectors, but when he opened his apartment door his exit was blocked by thick, black smoke. He says he grabbed his dog and climbed out the first-floor window.

The fire broke about 10 blocks away from where a house exploded into rubble overnight Monday.
