Des Plaines has holiday light recycling
The Des Plaines Deep Green Committee, the city's public works and engineering department, and Elgin Recycling Inc., will co-host a free holiday light recycling event now through the end of February.
Starting Tuesday, drop off old holiday lights between 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday at the public works facility, 1111 Joseph J. Schwab (Campground) Road or at City Hall, 1420 Miner St. The city will accept C7, C9, rope lights, mini-lights, LED lights and extension cords.
Light strands connected to wreaths, garlands, or other material cannot be taken. Elgin Recycling will then recycle the copper and plastic materials. Residents dropping lights off at City Hall are limited to two 25-foot strands or equivalent length. (847) 391-5464.
