Meadows man accused of Craigslist scheme
Rolling Meadows police conducted a sting operation Monday and arrested a 21-year-old man who conned victims on Craigslist into sending him “thousands of dollars” worth of jewelry over the past three weeks, according to authorities
A Rolling Meadows investigator posed as a delivery man on Monday and arrested Daniel Marchwiany after he signed for a package of jewelry that he thought was sent to him by a Craigslist user, according to police.
Police said Marchwiany, of the 5000 block of Carriageway Drive in Rolling Meadows, would contact jewelry sellers using a fictitious name and have them ship the merchandise overnight through FedEx or UPS. He told the sellers that he would pay them through PayPal but would never actually make a payment, police said. Instead he would send a fake e-mail that telling sellers no payment had been made due to an “error,” according to police.
The Rolling Meadows Police Department received numerous complaints from victims between Nov. 29 and Dec. 20 before learning that Marchwiany was pawning the jewelry, police said.
Marchwiany was charged with one count of theft over $300, and bond was set at $40,000. His next court date is Jan. 13.
