Coroners ID man shot after shooting Lake County officer

GARY, Ind. (AP) - Coroners have identified a man who shot a Lake County police officer serving legal papers and then was shot by the officer.

The Lake County Coroner's Office identified him as Whitney J. Crawley, 23, of Gary. The cause of death was pending.

After Crawley was shot, he fled from him home and collapsed across the street, Indiana State Police said. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The officer was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. He is expected to make a full recovery. The identity of the officer will be released later, police said.

The officer, a 59-year-old lieutenant with 30 years on the Lake County Sheriff's Department, was serving papers Thursday for a court-ordered seizure of property, authorities said. As the officer was executing the court order, Crawley shot and wounded him, Sheriff Oscar Martinez said.

The officer returned fire, striking Crawley at least once, police said.
