Batavia's arts community to woo volunteers at party
The Batavia Arts Volunteer Wine and Dessert Event which was canceled due to weather conditions, has been rescheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 17.
Art in Your Eye is teaming up with Water Street Studios to celebrate art and to recruit volunteers for the Batavia arts. The evening begins at 7:30 p.m. and includes a wine and dessert reception, short presentations of volunteer needs from Water Street Studios and Art in Your Eye, and feedback and recommendations for the arts in the future.
The evening also features 2010 poster artist Greta Bell of Batavia and gives attendees the opportunity to vote on the piece of art they would like featured for the 2010 poster. Also part of the evening is the first preview opportunity of the 2010 Art in Your Eye Miniatures. These small pieces of fine art were developed by the 2009 festival artists and will be auctioned at the 2010 festival.
The 2010 Art in Your Eye is scheduled for the weekend of Aug. 14-15 and festival plans are well under way for Batavia's signature downtown art event.
"It takes over 100 volunteers to make Art in Your Eye a successful event each year. Volunteers ranging in age from teens to seniors are invited to sign up and become part of Batavia's signature art festival," said Art in Your Eye Steering Committee member Rebecca Allen.
The following types of volunteer jobs for Art in Your Eye are needed now to help plan for the festival: a volunteer coordinator who works with the steering committee to make sure volunteers are properly staffed for their areas and fill as necessary; a food coordinator who works with festival food vendors on set up, menu and distribution of lunches to artists; a break room coordinator who staffs the air-conditioned break room inside city hall and coordinates refreshments provided with food coordinator; an information tent coordinator who works with steering committee to order merchandise for sale, set up the tents at the fest and take down each day of fest as well as volunteers for the weekend festival. Britta McKenna, of the Art in Your Eye Steering Committee, said that "Both Art in Your Eye and Water Street Studios depend on volunteers to make sure these two arts organizations are successful. We encourage anyone who is interested in helping Batavia support the arts to come to the reception Feb. 17."
Water Street Studios, 160 S. Water St., Batavia, is open to the public Friday nights, Saturdays and Sunday afternoons and depends on volunteers to staff the gallery and assist the artists and WSS with special projects. Those not able to attend the Feb. 17 event can visit the Art in Your Eye Web site at artinyoureye.com for more information or call the Batavia MainStreet office at (630) 761-3528 to find out what volunteer opportunities are available.
