Library offers Animal Olympics

Get in the spirit of the upcoming Winter Olympic games at the "Animal Olympics" children's program from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 18, at the Dundee Township Public Library, 555 Barrington Ave., East Dundee. The program is free. Animal Olympics features fun relay games for children in first grade and older. Registration is required for this program. Enjoy Pacemakers at monthly dance

The monthly free public dances hosted by Les Pace and the Pacemakers will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, at the Elgin Veterans of Foreign Wars, 1600 Weld Road. The musicians who join Les play just for their enjoyment and for that of the dancing public. Big band era music is featured. Refreshments and light food fare is available for purchase. Everyone is invited to come and dance, sing along or just listen. These dances are generally held on the last Sunday of every month. For information, call Les at (847) 742-3879.

Church offers hoagies for sale

The Chancel Choir of First Congregational Church of Dundee is offering Super Bowl Sunday hoagie sandwiches for sale as a fundraiser. The cost of each hoagie is $6. Sandwiches made following the Dundee Scots "secret" recipe will be available for pickup on Saturday, Feb. 6 after 10:30 a.m. Order deadline is Sunday, Jan. 31. "The Church on the Hill" is at 900 S. League to host candidate forum

The Carpentersville-Dundee League of Women Voters has invited candidates who are opposed in the Feb. 2 primary to a candidates forum on Thursday, Jan. 21. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at the Dundee Township Park District Senior Center, 665 Barrington Ave., Carpentersville.

Those who have been invited are: candidates for Kane County Treasurer David J. Rickert and Bob Kovanic; candidates for Kane County Sheriff Robert Russell and Donald E. Kramer. Also invited are candidates for Kane County Board District 21 Lee Barrett and John P. Fahy; and for District 23 Maggie Auger and Donald J. Moore. In addition to the county candidates, the candidates for the Illinois 25th Senate District, Chris Lauzen and P. Sean Michels, have been invited to participate. All of these candidates are on the Republican Party ballot. There are no candidates in these races facing opposition on the Democratic Party ticket in the Feb. 2 primary.

Baseball clinic offered at Jacobs

A Jacobs Youth Baseball Coaches Clinic will be held on Saturday, Jan. 30, at the high school, 2601 Bunker Hill Drive, Algonquin. Call the school at (847) 658-2500. Registration will start from 7 to 7:30 a.m. with coffee and doughnuts. Terry Ayers, an American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Famer, will have a program on "Pitchers Pitch Too Much and Don't Play Catch Enough." From 8:30 to 9:15 a.m., Kirby Smith, an Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Famer, will offer "Lead-up Sequences for Developing Hitting Skills." Kevin Nelson, a Philadelphia Phillies AAA catcher, will focus on "A Catching Foundation."

Scouts can fulfill badge requirements

Complete "Frosty Fun" and "Your Outdoor Surroundings" badge requirements at Hawthorne Hill Nature Center during the Junior Girl Scout Badge Workshop on Saturday, Jan. 30. Elgin Public Museum and Hawthorne Hill Nature Center staff will take you outdoors to hike, play and explore. They will have some activities indoors, too. The program runs 1 to 4 p.m. and costs $15. Call the Elgin Public Museum at (847) 741-6655 to register. Space is limited. Join them on Saturday, Feb. 20, for the "Webelos Cub Scout Geologist & Naturalist." Complete your Naturalist and Geologist pin requirements with our team from Elgin Public Museum and Hawthorne Hill Nature Center. Take a hike in the woods, watch a volcano model erupt, solve rock mysteries and more. Please dress for the weather and bring a water bottle and snack. The workshop is from 1 to 4 p.m. and costs $15.
