Geneva's Santacaterina strolls to NIU

Geneva senior Michael Santacaterina, named the captain of the Daily Herald's 2009 Tri-Cities All-Area Football Team, will head to Northern Illinois University as a preferred walk-on, according to an e-mail sent Monday to the Daily Herald by Vikings football coach Rob Wicinski.

Santacaterina, a 6-foot, 205-pound running back and defensive back, led the Vikings to a 9-2 record in 2009. A two-year starter at safety, Santacaterina also helped Geneva win its fourth straight title in the Western Sun Conference, which will disband after this season.

A pounding back, Santacaterina ran for 802 yards and 22 touchdowns last fall for Geneva, and added a touchdown reception. On defense he placed fifth on Geneva in tackles with 70, making 34 solo tackles and 36 assists. He intercepted 2 passes and recovered 2 fumbles.
