Band plays on while we flood in Wheaton

Wheaton needs five to 10 years to study water problem. That is a study, not a solution. City Manager Don Rose implied that the study would be too expensive and even if the study is completed, like other suburbs, implementation of any plan will be cost-prohibitive.

I have been here for 30 years and the problem has been here for all 30 years. The combination of an electrical grid that shuts down in a strong breeze or in response to a curious squirrel and a town that for 30 years has been flooding due to poor planning is unacceptable.

I bet that if I would come to city hall periodically and dump a bucket of water on City Manager Rose's desk it would not take him 10 years to study what he can do to stop me. I think the urgency would be ratcheted up.

Over the past 30 years, while we tread water, we have built a new library addition, a new state-of-the-art city hall, numerous re-dos of the downtown business district and 30 years of municipal band.

Like the Titanic, as individual homeowners fight to stem the floods, we can be comforted because “the band played on.
