Elgin apartment fire sends one woman to the hosptial

An early morning fire Saturday on Elgin's west side left a woman hospitalized and without a home.

Elgin firefighters said they responded at 2:36 a.m. to a blaze inside a large apartment building at 450 South Belmont Ave.

The blaze began in a first-floor studio apartment and firefighters broke down the door to rescue the woman.

She was taken to Provena St. Joseph Hospital. Her condition was unknown Saturday.

The fire was contained to the apartment.

It took two minutes for crews to bring the blaze under control, Elgin Fire Capt. Dick Cummings said.

Damage is estimated at $1,800, but extensive smoke damage and the broken door make the apartment uninhabitable, Cummings said.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation
