Truck crash closes 176 in Libertyville

The intersection of Route 176 and St. Mary's Road in Libertyville was shut down Wednesday morning after a car struck a fence and gas meter nearby.

The collision occurred at 8:15 a.m., and the roads remained closed as crews worked to fix the broken gas meter. A strong odor of gas was detected in the area, said Sgt. John Byrne of the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

After smelling gas, the driver of the silver Toyota four runner was able to leave his vehicle for safety reasons, Byrne said.

It was unclear the cause of the crash, but roads throughout the suburbs remained icy Wednesday morning, Byrne said.
