Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church celebrates 50 years

Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church of Grayslake announces it is celebrating its 50th anniversary as a congregation this year.

To commemorate this historic event, Shepherd of the Lakes will host a worship service at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 30. Participating in the service will be former pastors of Shepherd of the Lakes, with the message being given by Bishop Wayne Miller from the ELCA Metropolitan Chicago Synod.

A 1 p.m. luncheon will follow at Maravella’s Banquet Facility in Fox Lake, 4 Washington St. Doors open at noon for fellowship.

During the summer of 1962, the Rev. John Freed secured a commitment from 40 charter members, families who formed the foundation of the new house of worship. The first services were held in the cafeteria of Grayslake High School.

Ground was broken for the new church in September 1964 at the current site, 285 E. Washington St. in Grayslake.
