59 charged in Chicago-area shoplifting sting

Police have arrested 59 people in connection with a professional shoplifting operation in the Chicago area.

Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez says the organized retailed theft ring targeted stores and malls in the suburbs and along Michigan Avenue. The preholiday shopping season effort was called “Operation Whoville.” Prosecutors say those involved would steal from the store and then resell the merchandise.

Investigators went undercover in stores during the operation that started in mid-October. Stolen items included clothing, jewelry, cosmetics and electronics. Authorities estimated the value of stolen items in the tens of thousands of dollars. One stolen vase was valued at more than $5,000.
