Elgin police kill two pit bulls

Elgin police shot and killed two pit bulls Wednesday night after the dogs exhibited “threatening behavior,” according the department.

Around 10:30 p.m. the dogs were spotted in the backyard of a home on the 300 block of Elm Street. The homeowner called police for help, police said.

Officers arrived and tried to catch the pit bulls, but the dogs soon became aggressive and were subsequently shot at the scene, police said.

Both dogs had collars and tags and police were able to get their owner’s information by Thursday morning, police said. The owner was charged with two counts of having a dog at large, two counts of biting and attacking and two counts of dangerous animal behavior.

Elgin police refuse to disclose at this time the name of the dog’s owner or any other information about this case as they continue their investigation.
