Cops bust indoor pot farm in Elgin

An Elgin man faces up to five years in prison after his arrest last week on charges of growing marijuana in his home.

Richard A. Bacon, 48, of the 700 block of Villa Street, faces felony charges of production of cannabis plants, possession and manufacturing of more than 30 grams of marijuana, according to the Kane County state's attorney's office.

Bacon is free on bond and due in court on Dec. 21.

According to court records, Bacon is charged with possession of 97.5 grams of pot, which is about 3½ ounces.

Elgin police spokeswoman Sue Olafson said Bacon was arrested at 8:30 p.m. Friday at his home after police received a tip from another law enforcement agency and found 35 plants.

The estimated street value of the bust was $25,000, she said.

“The Elgin Police Department always follows up on any and all tips,” Olafson said.

In recent months, police have made numerous busts of indoor pot farms within the city.

The largest occurred in mid-September when, acting on a tip, police arrested three people and raided four homes, seizing $50,000 to $60,000 in growing equipment and confiscating 550 plants.
