Man sentenced to 39 years in Naperville murder

The final of five men charged with a botched armed robbery that ended in bloodshed on Naperville's southwest side was sentenced Wednesday to 39 years in prison.

Reginald D. Chandler-Martin received the punishment for the April 1, 2008 death of John D. Rosales, 23.

Chandler-Martin faced 20 to 75 years in prison for first-degree murder and home invasion earlier. Circuit Judge Richard Schoenstedt imposed the sentence. The defendant also must serve an additional three years behind bars for shoving a Will County sheriff's deputy in the jail.

The 23-year-old Aurora man was one of two armed men who stormed into Rosales' townhouse at 2511 Sheehan Drive in Naperville after they conspired for several weeks to rob him of cocaine, marijuana and money.

Chandler-Martin ordered everyone in the residence to the ground, while accomplice Tyrell Jackson shot Rosales once in the neck after he refused. Jackson, 23, of Villa Park, received a 70-year sentence last month.

Two other men, Cherrod Moore, 30, and Courtney L. Mayes, 23, both of Aurora, were playing video games with Rosales when the violence erupted. They initially claimed to be innocent bystanders, but police said they later incriminated themselves. Both men are serving 20-year prison terms.

Rosales fled the house shortly after being wounded and drove north. His car crashed into a concrete median at 87th Street, and Rosales stumbled from his vehicle for about 200 feet before collapsing in a grassy portion of the median, where two other friends who weren't involved in the botched robbery plan tried to help.

A fifth man, Justin C. Harper, 22, who provided the guns, received a five-year prison term after he admitted committing aggravated robbery. He cooperated with investigators.

Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow described the crime as a "senseless and coldblooded murder." Assistant Will County State's Attorneys Steve Platek and Michael Knick prosecuted the defendants in Joliet.
