Mattera's big bat booms for Lake Zurich
Megan Mattera mattered.
The Lake Zurich junior went 4-for-4 with 2 home runs and 6 RBI, leading the Bears to a 15-5 win over Warren in the third-place game of Barrington's Spring Fling at the Fields of Dreams on Thursday.
Ella Aslan and Paige Goldberg also had big days at the plate for Lake Zurich (2-1). Aslan went 2-for-3 with 2 doubles, 2 RBI and a sacrifice. Goldberg was 3-for-4 with 2 doubles and 2 runs scored.
Tabbetha Bohac earned the win for the Bears.
Warren fell to 1-2.
Barrington 10, Zion-Benton 2: For the fifth consecutive season, Barrington's softball team claimed the championship of its own Spring Fling tournament.
The Fillies (3-0) posted a 10-2 victory over Zion-Benton as junior Kiley Dolezal (3-0) threw a 5-hitter with 5 strikeouts.
The game was tied 2-2 going into the fifth inning when the Fillies scored 5 runs after two were out.
Colleen Shandley (2-for-4) scored the first run on a wild pitch. Nora Logue then belted a solo homer over the left-center field fence.
Kristin Kuhn (2-for-4, 2 RBI), Jordan Wekony (2-for-3, RBI) and Dolezal all had RBI singles later in the inning.
"Our two-out hitting in the fifth inning was impressive," said Barrington coach Perry Peterson. "Thats was the difference in the game."
