Kirk visits Libya with fellow senators
Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk visited Libya with some of his colleagues to take stock of the situation in the capital city of Tripoli.
Kirk talked to reporters in a conference call Thursday after landing in Malta. He says the era of Moammar Gadhafi has ended with graffiti throughout the city that is anti-Gadhafi.
The senator says Gadhafi’s image also has been ripped down from dozens of billboards. He called it the “remnants of a cult of personality.”
He says the delegation met with some of Libya’s current leaders and toured the destroyed U.S. embassy complex.
A NATO-backed rebellion ousted Gadhafi. He has not been found.
The delegation Kirk traveled with included Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina.
