Your health: Fish facts

Juiced up

Juice is part of breakfast for many of us. But like anything in life, there's the good and bad. Here are a few things to ponder, courtesy of The Washington Post, as you slurp your Cheerios.

Pros: You can put whole fruits and vegetables in a juicer, letting the machine do the work. Cons: Who likes to clean that clogged machine?

Pros: If you create the right combination of ingredients, fresh juice is simply delicious. Cons: There is a lot of sugar in juice and it adds more calories per ounce than whole fruit or vegetables.

Catch of the day

Adults should eat fish at least twice a week, according to the American Heart Association. It's recommended that young children and pregnant women should avoid fish with the highest mercury concentrations and stick with shrimp, salmon and catfish.

Here are some seafood facts by the numbers.

Eight ounces: The amount of seafood most of us should eat each week. That's two 4-ounce servings, more than twice the 3½ ounces most of us typically have.

Twelve ounces: The weekly amount recommended for women who are pregnant or breast-feeding.

Four ounces: The amount of fish in a small can of tuna, which means one or two tuna sandwiches get you halfway to your weekly goal.

While fish contains heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, experts say you should still round out your diet with whole grains, fruits and vegetables.
