Savers opening stores in Arlington Heights, Carol Stream

A national thrift chain is opening three area stores Thursday, including sites in Arlington Heights and Carol Stream.

Savers, which has been called a “higher-end” retail thrift store by local officials, is set to open stores at 780 W. Dundee Road in Arlington Heights and 1231 N. Gary Ave. in Carol Stream. A third store is opening in Orland Park.

The store offers clothing and accessories, housewares, electronics and furniture, according to a news release.

Officials say each new store will add about 50 jobs to the community and a portion of the retailer’s profits are given to the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Chicago and the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America.

In Carol Stream, the store is taking over a formerly vacant 35,000-square-foot “mid-size box” space at the north end of a multi-tenant shopping center. The building’s anchor tenant, Cabinets & Granite Direct, an importer and wholesaler of granite and cabinets, opened in May.

The building had been vacant since Value City closed in 2009.

Savers now has a total of seven locations in the Chicago area. Stores in Downers Grove, Naperville and Crystal Lake opened in 2011 and a store in St. Charles opened last June.
