Glen Ellyn man cleans desk, finds $1 million winning lottery ticket

A Glen Ellyn man received $1 million in lottery winnings Wednesday after noticing he won on a ticket that had been sitting on his desk for two months.

According to a news release from the Illinois Lottery, Ron Yurcus, a retired hospice chaplain and 45-year resident of the village, discovered the winning Powerball ticket from an Aug. 22 drawing a few weeks ago.

“About 12 tickets had accumulated on my desk, and I decided to tidy up to make room for my new computer,” he said in a statement. “I checked the winning numbers on the Illinois Lottery website and just about screamed when I saw that I won.”

Yurcus and his wife, Kathleen, plan to invest the money, share it with family — especially their three children and four grandchildren — and donate some of the funds to several charities.

The Illinois Lottery also presented the BP gas station at 339 Roosevelt Road in Glen Ellyn with a $10,000 ceremonial bonus check for selling the winning ticket.
