St. Matthew to hold 22nd annual pig roast
Located on Old McHenry Road, between Quentin and Midlothian roads, in Hawthorn Woods, St. Matthew Lutheran Church will hold its 22nd annual pig roast Sunday, Aug. 19, with food being served from noon-5 p.m.
This year’s event will be the first of many events to take place as St. Matthew begins a year long celebration of its 150th anniversary.
The pig roast all began 22 years ago when St. Matthew member John Knoll asked a small group of women, who were working on the church’s annual chicken dinner, if they might ever be interested in having a pig roast. What began with two pigs so many years ago has now grown to an event that attracts people from miles around.
Roasting 15 pigs and serving nearly 2,000 guests in 2011, St. Matthew will again prepare and serve a meal of roast pork, German potato salad, baked beans, applesauce and hot, buttered sweet corn. Culver’s Ice Cream will be on the midway with ice cream cones and turtle sundaes. Hot dogs, ice tea, soda, wine and beer will also be available for an additional cost.
Returning again this year will be the Alpiners, providing musical entertainment throughout the afternoon. In addition to midway games, Bob Hirsch, balloon master, will entertain with his balloon creations. “Clowning Around,” starring Rick Colon, will also be on the midway with his comedy and magic, and there will be facing painting and a spacewalk for children.
Admission is $12 for adults, $5 for ages 4 to 10 and free for kids younger than 4.
