MLS postpones game so team can honor Urso
Major League Soccer has postponed a Columbus Crew game Saturday so team members can attend services for Kirk Urso, the rookie midfielder from Lombard who died Sunday.
A visitation for Urso, son of Michael and Sandy Urso, is scheduled for 2-9 p.m. today at Christ The King Church, 1501 S. Main St., in Lombard, and from 9-10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Church Interment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery. Per the family’s request, please omit flowers, and donations to the wishes of the family or the American Heart Association are appreciated.
Urso’s team, the Columbus Crew, was scheduled to play Toronto FC Saturday in Columbus, and now that game will be played Wednesday, Aug. 22, at Crew Stadium. The team has planned several tributes to Urso, including a video remembrance and patches that players will wear the rest of the season.
Urso, 22, died Sunday at Grant Medical Center in Columbus after collapsing at a downtown restaurant. On Monday, a coroner said signs pointed to “an apparent natural death” pending results from toxicology tests and on other tissue after an autopsy.
