Don't trade health for cash

In the past month the subject of allowing the Elgin riverboat casino or casinos to lift the smoking ban is something I find and many find unacceptable.

Elgin Mayor Ed Schock was quoted in support of lifting the ban due to lost revenues from the Elgin riverboat. Mayor and those alike, are you saying you are in favor of putting people's health second to making more money?

Who's next the restaurant down the street, the bar on the corner, or anyone with gambling, Arlington Park Racetrack or major sporting events?

It's all or nothing, Mr. Mayor. Once again we want to make exceptions for the almighty dollar.

I live in Elgin. I benefit directly from riverboat money. But I would rather see Elgin find another way to acquire additional revenue or not to waste what we have. How about we quit building recreation centers that lose large amounts money every year? How about Elgin getting out of the home buying market? How about Elgin not dumping tons of money into the Bandits pro softball team that benefited no one except the Bandits and Judson University, a private college?

How about, Mr. Mayor, you think about those who have supported you since your first election. Maybe, Ed, you have been in to many smoked-filled backrooms lately and it's fogged up your mind.
