Calhoun County considers withholding state money

HARDIN -- Calhoun County officials say that since the state of Illinois is late with the $107,000 it owes them, they may withhold payments to the state.
Calhoun County Board members and other officials said at Thursday's board meeting that they are considering not paying state government the mandated portions of court and department fees until Illinois comes up with the late payments.
Calhoun County State's Attorney Charles Burch said at the meeting he feels the county can put the state's share of fees in escrow until the state payments arrive.
County Treasurer Lisa Roth says the county needs $90,000 per month to operate, and had only $29,000 in its General Fund as of Thursday.
