North Aurora man charged in standoff with police

A standoff between police and a North Aurora man holed-up inside a townhouse Tuesday afternoon ended safely with the man’s arrest nearly two hours after a gun was fired inside his home, according to authorities.

Police were called at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday to the 200 block of Linn Court, and while officers were en route, a shot was fired inside the home.

When officers arrived, a woman and three children were outside the residence, while the suspect, later identified as Charles Treadwell, remained inside, police said.

Police from the North Aurora and Aurora departments set up a perimeter around the home and evacuated nearby townhouses during the standoff.

Police were able to make contact with Treadwell at 5:15 p.m., and he voluntarily came out of the house and was taken into custody, officials said.

Officers kept the townhouse surrounded until 5:37 p.m., when nearby residents were able to return to their homes, police said.

A handgun and ammunition was recovered from the residence, and Treadwell was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, possession of a firearm without a FOID and possession of ammunition without a FOID card.

Treadwell is set to appear at 8 a.m. Wednesday at a bond hearing at the Aurora Branch Court.
