Three Ill. towns vying to test Google's new ultra-high-speed Internet
DECATUR -- Add Decatur to the list of Illinois towns trying to catch Google's eye.
The central Illinois city is joining at least two others in the state and countless others around the country hoping the technology company picks it to test its experimental, high-speed Internet service. Peoria and Galesburg are also trying to win Google's favor.
Google in February said it wants to find a town with between 50,000 and 500,000 people to try out the service. The California company says it will operate about 100 times faster than any commercially available service.
Decatur Assistant City Manager Billy Tyus says businesses and local citizens would benefit if the town's bid succeeds.
