Congregations work on green projects

The world has changed in some pretty dramatic ways in the last few decades. I am constantly reminded of this in magazine articles, and the nightly news on TV, and even as I survey my immediate surroundings.

Gone are the days when one could avoid looking at the consequences of our behavior as a throw-away, energy-hogging society.

The consequences are apparent locally as well as worldwide. We have polluted the air we all breathe, the water we drink and the land on which our food is grown.

Our landfills in Lake County are quickly filling to capacity, and we’ve even become accustomed to ozone alerts in the summer months, indicating the air may be unhealthy to breathe.

The question on my mind is, what can we, as individuals, do about any of this? The scope of the problem is huge, and can seem overwhelming. But there is power in numbers. This is why, in 2009, several concerned persons from different houses of worship came together and formed a group dedicated to work on this issue at a local level.

Our group is called the Lake County Green Congregations. Our purpose is to educate ourselves and others about the ways in which we each can make a real difference and implement changes to lighten our human footprint.

Lake County Green Congregations is holding a Green Living Fair on Saturday, March 12, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., at the Civic Center in Libertyville. Information and advice available will include everything from Community Supported Agriculture, Farmer’s Markets, the dangers of plastic bags, and the health and importance of our watersheds. Information about what our places of worship are doing will be available, and there will be recycle opportunities for various items, from ink cartridges to lightweight electronics.

We hope to see you there.
