Lombard's North Water Tower gets new roof

LOMBARD, Illinois— The Lombard Public Works Department is announcing that Chicago Bridge & Iron Incorporated will remove the roof section of the water tower on West Road just north of North Avenue on July 5.

The water reservoir tower, built in 1953, was determined to need a new roof section prior to painting. The existing steel roof section will be cut off and a new roof section will be set and welded into place. The top of the reservoir tower is 105 feet above the ground. The contractor will bring in a large crane in the morning and will have the top of the tower switched out by the end of the day, according to the Public Works Department. The project will cost $480,000. It was budgeted for FY12 (June 2011-May 2012) at $500,000.

The new top was constructed on the ground next to the tower. The work is dependant on weather. If there is a wind greater than 20 miles per hour, the work will have to be postponed. Once the roof has been replaced, the tower will be completely painted inside and out. The tower should be completely refinished by sometime in late fall.
